"Safe Eyes": From Field Innovation to Global Vision Protection

The development of Safe Eyes safety goggles originated from a direct challenge faced by Phil Hall, a forestry contractor based in Masterton. Mr. Hall received critical feedback from his work crew regarding conventional protective eyewear, which was consistently rendered unusable due to lens fogging caused by demanding daily work conditions and heat. This issue posed a significant barrier to compliance and worker safety.

In a resourceful move, Phil Hall devised a practical field modification: he adapted full-screen swimming goggles by replacing the lenses with fine metal gauze. This simple substitution allowed the area behind the visor to breathe, effectively eliminating the fogging problem. The immediate approval from his team prompted Mr. Hall to hand-manufacture several additional units.

Recognizing the commercial potential of his successful innovation, Phil Hall engaged Absolute Tooling Solutions in Palmerston North. We were tasked with professionalizing the design and engineering the specialized tooling required for mass production. Our solution involved designing tooling to over-mould the breathable gauze visor within a newly designed, durable plastic goggle frame.

This successful partnership paved the way for the commercial launch of Safe Eyes. The finished product is now manufactured by Pike's Plastics in Masterton and is actively exported worldwide, serving as a leading example of how workplace necessity can drive global product innovation.
